HABITAT

•Use of stars and other signs ( clouds, wayes,etc ) to navigate.
TOOLS
•Canoe.

•Maa pit: fermented food wrapped in banana leaves and buried.
•Shark fins are cut off and dried to sell to passing cargo ships.
FUTURE
•Due to its remote location, traditions are well preserved.
•Epidemics, natural disasters, climate change and the encroachment of the modern world are all potential threats.
the NENETS
HABITAT
•They live in the Arctic tundra and depend on the lichen pastures.
• Live in extreme temperatures, that can plummet to -50ÂșC.
LIFE STYLE
•Reindeer herding.
•Migration patterns through the Arctic.
•The reindeer is revered as a symbol.
•Fishing through ice holes using nets.
•Durign migration chums are moved every other day. ONE family per chum.
•Labour division: men-animals, women-domestic sphere.
•Russian boarding schools.
TOOLS
•Economy based on reindeers.
•They use sledges to carry their camps.
•Traditional clothing : malitsa, gus & yagushka made of reindeer skins.
•Also wear double layer boots.
•They have the sacred sledge.
•Their hut is called CHUM ( split into male & female space).
FUTURE
•The discovery of gas and oil reserves will change their future.
•Land is becoming scarce for the Nenets.
•Russian governement doesn't take care of tribal cultures.
the BABONGOS
HABITAT
•Live in the African virgin forest.
•Hot, humid, the air is thick with insects.
•Malaria and dengi fever are endemic.
•Logging is destroying their habitat.
LIFE STYLE
•Nomadic life moving through the forest.
•A camp has 6-8 huts with up to 20 people in it.
•They are hunt-gatherers (generally men).
•Women grow vegetables and stay with the children.
TOOLS
•Use bows and arrows to catch preys.
•Also use arrows tipped with poison.
•They’re experts in the use of Iboga (a powerful drug for their ceremonies)
•Their hut is called TUDI.
FUTURE
•The jungle is decreasing due to logging activity. New roads will bring desease and cash economy.
•In 2002 a big portion of the rainforest was declared National Park, thus protecting the environment and opening opportunities for the Babongos to work as forest guides or wardens.
•They could get a viable economy if they found a western way of marketing for the iboga .
